Welcome to Trier - City of Museums!

Collection – Preservation – Research – Education: An introduction to Trier’s museums

Trier is considered to be the oldest city in Germany. The academic approach of its five museums ensures the preservation of the historical and cultural heritage of the city, using the modern exhibition rooms to present a broad spectrum of topics on local history and prominent figures. All the buildings are within easy walking distance of each another. On the occasion of both the International Museum Day in May and the Trier Museum Night in September the five museums are offering a programme full of special events for the entire family. Take advantage of the tours, children’s activities, music and culinary delights in the characteristic setting of an old town steeped in history!

Trier is renowned worldwide for its historic structures: the Porta Nigra city gate, the Basilica of Constantine, Trier Cathedral and Liebfrauen Church, the Roman baths, the amphitheatre and the Roman Bridge. The places of interest in this city located on the Moselle River have been on the list of UNESCO world heritage sites since 1986. Further attractions for the visitor to Trier are the cathedral treasure vault, the treasury of the municipal library and the toy museum.
