Zur AusstellungUnter der Trikolore Sous le drapeau tricolore Trier in Frankreich - Napoleon in Trier Trèves en France - Napoléon à Trèves 1794 - 1804 - 1814 2004
In the year 2004 Trier and its partners Saarbrücken, Metz and Luxembourg, bound in the cross-border city network “QuattorPole”, open a window to their common history: It will then be the 200th anniversary of Napoleon’s visit to Trier and Luxembourg, which were at that time - as well as Saarbrücken and Metz anyway - part of the French territory in occasion of his “coronation travel” in October 1804. The exhibition “unter der Tricolore - Sous le drapeau tricolore”, which will deal on a broad scale with the two decades of the “French Period” between 1794 and 1814, shall remind of this early common bond of this Greater region. Like in the city of Trier, the French Revolution swept away the old feudal system in Saarbrücken, Luxembourg and Metz. Liberty, Equality, Fraternity were intended for all citizens. But did everybody want to be “liberated”? The Revolution as a promise and a menace, the conquest as a liberation or rather renewed slavery, French as the official language being an early chance for a multicultural way of life or rather a source of alienation within one’s own country?
